It’s black and green, weighs more than 23 elephants

What’s black and green, 6 metres high, 27 metres long, covers an overall area in excess of 3 badminton courts, and has another internal stat that refers to elephants?

We can’t yet reveal the customer who is taking delivery of this huge YIZUMI injection moulding machine and the parts it will be moulding are new to the market. But here are a few details:
The machine, which took 4 months to build, has dual injection units, each with 270mm screws. It has a massive combined shot weight of 147,490g in GPPS. It uses over 8000kN of force just to open the platens, which can open to 4.5m. This is a record for YIZUMI.

The distance between the tie bars is 3.2m.
A single platen weighs 140 tonnes which equates to the average weight of 23 Asian elephants.

On test, huge as it is, the machine still saved more than 30% energy when compared to a traditional toggle lock machine, running on smart servo drive technology. This allows the machine to be in low-power standby mode during the longer cooling time for the larger products it produces.

Compression moulding technology is used, which can effectively reduce the internal stress which ordinarily may be an issue causing deformation of larger sized products.

All the skill which has gone into designing and building this huge injection moulding machine is obviously available throughout the YIZUMI range and we have various models here at STV Machinery, ready and waiting for your inspection. Please contact us to make an appointment to view and test.

DCIM – Direct Compounding Injection Moulding from Yizumi

Direct Compounding Injection Moulding from Yizumi

Yizumi have developed this patented DCIM system in cooperation with Exipnos GmbH. The system was demonstrated at K19 making a multi impression bio-degradable cup on a standard Yizumi UN160A5 moulding machine integrated with their compound delivery system (CDS).  This CDS equipment comprises a portable extruder which feeds compounded materials directly into the throat of a standard injection moulding machine plasticising unit.  The extruder screw with an L/D ratio of 32/1, is made up of interchangeable segments to provide optimum mixing performance of the raw materials and additives that are continuously dosed during the process.   Four sizes of CDS are available providing a max throughput range from 20kg / hour – 350kg /hour.

By combining injection moulding, multi-material gravimetric dosing (with an optional slide feed station for introducing glass fibres and minerals) and compounding, the DCIM technology can significantly reduce the amount of CO₂ emissions.  The technology avoids additional heating and cooling of the polymer, as well as reducing transport costs from the compounding company to the moulding company.  The total energy for this process is approximately 500Wh per kg, saving 264kg of CO₂ per tonne of compounded material.  The system offers additional benefits such as eliminating the need to dry the compounded material again, up to 30% improvement in plasticising performance and the ability to process recycled materials without intermediate steps for the preparation of the material.

The DCIM unit is interfaced to the Yizumi moulding machine controller which means recipes from formulations can be stored and recovered with the mould process data. This makes programming relatively simple.  The unit can be wheeled away from the moulding machine leaving the moulding machine to operate in its standard format.

STV Machinery welcomes Steve Lacey

STV has been selling top quality refurbished injection moulding machines for 20 years without the need for anyone to actively sell them.  If a potential customer likes what they see on our website, they come to us to see the machine in the flesh. We don’t sell refurbished machines; our customers buy them.

Since we became the UK distributor for Yizumi, there has had to be a different approach. Our new machines sales in the last 2.5 years have exceeded all expectations and we want to capitalise on this by having a full-time experienced person in the field dedicated to growing our market share.

” Steve was an obvious choice and we are delighted to have been able to attract a person with his industry knowledge, technical expertise and no BS approach to sales. ” – Karl Perry, Director

Find about more about Steve Lacey with our Q & A

How did your career in plastics start?

I was a Raleigh Apprentice, moving into engineering test and development, then production engineering, and project
engineering, before moving into sales of injection moulding machinery in 1989 (yes I am a fossil).

Tell us about your history with STV?

I first worked for Karl Perry when he owned Spaceminster, selling Boy machines for him for 9 years, before moving onto Demag, then becoming a partner in STV in 2004. Later I ran Hallam Plastics for 7 years, before moving to Negri Bossi, then returning to work for Karl and Richard (who I first met when I gave Karl a lift to collect him on the school run!). It’s a nice feeling being back working with Karl and Richard; no nonsense, customer service, honesty and  response first and foremost. What more do you need?

What do you think of the Yizumi Injection Moulding Machines?

In my opinion, Yizumi machines have made a strong mark in the UK market, which I have seen as a competitor; Asian
machinery took an increasingly large slice of the UK market 3 or 4 years ago; build quality and all the included extras that European suppliers charge extra for adding to the attraction, and the type of company now buying them demonstrates this. I really liked the Yizumi offering and reading the RJG analysis was the confirmation that anyone needed that they can compare to the best from Europe in terms of repeatability and process control.

How has the plastics industry changed over your career to date?

From black and white to full colour..joking apart, product application and quality has changed the industry most, long gone are the majority of ‘cheap and cheerful’ plastic parts, the industry has matured and quality plastic components have become an intrinsic part of just about every part of modern life, from domestic appliances, to cars, aircraft, medical treatment etc. the list is endless.

What’s your opinion on the “Blue Planet” effect on the plastic industry?

There has been a negative backlash for sure, but the reality of the plastic waste you see in our oceans has been thrown as litter by the very people who are now waving the Blue Planet flag; Joe and Jane public. Drive along any road and look at the rubbish in the verges; the same rubbish blows into streams and rivers and into the sea. Now just imagine if that plastic bottle you see on the beach was glass and broken. Plastic has real value, but like anything, mis use creates problems. But there is a huge opportunity waiting for somebody who can come up with a system for  skimming floating waste and recycling it; just needs imagination and government support to make it happen; all we need is for world politicians to work together……..

What are your thoughts on Brexit and its effect on the plastic industry?

The delay in implementing the referendum has certainly had a negative impact, both on our industry, and commerce in general; like most people, I’ll be glad when the uncertainty has gone and normal service can continue!

Will we see you at any future exhibitions?

Try and stop me 😊. I’ll be at Interplas 2020 (stand GG10) 29th September – 1st October. See you there.

 Just for fun

1.      Your choice of Superpower and why? To be able to fly, who wouldn’t?

2.      Are you left handed or right handed? Ambidextrous

3.      What’s your favourite song? So many songs but if I had to choose surely the most amazing instrument is the human voice, and blood harmony the best of that; so ‘In My Room’ would be the choice I think

4.      What accomplishment are you most proud of? My daughter Kate, managing to stay out of jail, and not killing myself motorcycling, driving, cycling, paragliding, climbing…

5.      Sweet or Savoury? Savoury please

Yizumi at Chinaplas 2019

Chinaplas returns this week and is being held in Guangzhou, in the south of the country which is very close to one of Yizumi’s main manufacturing bases.  Richard from STV Machinery is attending the exhibition and will be given insight into Yizumi’s innovative new developments ahead of the exhibition and meeting up with customers from the UK.  Yizumi’s exhibition stand will be located in hall 3, section F41 at the China import & export fair complex.  Ahead of the first day of the exhibition, Yizumi have provided further details about the technology they will displaying at the exhibition;

Using a Yizumi 500 tonne clamp dual platen machine, this exhibition will be demonstrating technology which allows for in-mould coating using polyurethane as well as utilising a ‘Space A’ system.  This ‘Space A’ technology is used to effectively print a layer of sealing onto the part.  We’ll be looking at this technology with interest and hopefully providing further insight with some media.

Multi-component Solution

With the use of a 550 tonne clamp C-Series wide platen machine, this demonstration shows off the twin-shot capabilities of Yizumi machines.  Producing an automotive tail light cover with two applications of PMMA in a 2+2 cavity setup, visitors will be able to see the quality and tight tolerances achievable with this series of machine.

Running at cycle time of 2.5 seconds, this demonstration of high speed and high precision capability shows off the potential of the Yizumi PAC series range of machinery.  In conjunction with a Switek side entry robot and in mould labelling system, the setup will be moulding 4 cavities with PP very quickly and efficiently.

FF Series Electric injection moulding machine

This highly efficient and precise electric moulding machine will be producing a medical part with an 8 cavity mould using PP.  Utilising the performance of the servo direct control, the application will be running on a shorter cycle time compared to traditional machines while achieving a saving a in energy costs.

Along with the technology above on display at the main event, Yizumi are also running an open house at the same time as the exhibition.  At their main showroom, they will be exhibiting an additional 16 production solutions from their full range of machinery.  Customers wishing to inspect the additional solutions are able to do so by speaking with a Yizumi representative who will arrange for transport to and from the manufacturing facility.  A great opportunity to see behind the scenes and Richard will taking a closer look himself on Thursday.

If you’re attending the Chinaplas event and would like some further information about the Yizumi range of machinery then do please ask for Richard on the Yizumi stand and he’ll be happy to guide you through the technology on display.
